I was reluctant to post these files, because there is image-distortion in ALL video-capture.

LUE

Jelly passed this Summer.  Very sad.

We have a new dog, named LUE.

He is a British Lab.

Bjorn Selander — Team Radio Shack

I was experiencing  pain/discomfot, and getting sore in unusual muscles when racing, so my dad suggested I meet with Chris.

At first, I was apprehensive, because I had already worked with some of the top names in the field, without much improvement.

When I arrived for my first appointment, I could immediately see how Chris loves what he does,  and how he really cared about how I was feeling on the bike — not just how I looked.  He improved my position and component choices significantly.

I respect and honor his ideas and opinions, and stay in close contact.

We meet at least twice, each year, for assessment and adjustments. Thanks Chris for getting me back to feeling great on my bike again.

You are the man!

Bjorn Selander

Jason Scherman — Elite MTB

Chris -

I hope all is going well with you.  I’ve attached some pictures from my recent race in August at the Leadville Trail 100.   It was a challenging race and I was able to complete in 10:05, which for my first time I found to be admirable.

I would like to thank you for all that you have done for me with fitting my bike, along with the advice you have provided towards me for improving my speed & power.  Your changes have been instrumental in me having such a great year!  Up next is the Chequamegon 40.  After that, I’ll wrap up the year in October with a 12-hour solo event in Missouri, “Burnin’ at the Bluff.”

I look forward to our next meeting.

Thanks again – Jason Scherman

ANDY SCHIESL — IRONMAN TRITHLETE

Chris-

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to tell you how happy I am that I was able to work with you this Summer and get my fit dialed in.  You were right about moving my arm pads out wider.  I have never been more comfortable and fast on a tri bike.  I am getting ready for Ironman Arizona right now and am very anxious to see how I do.  Everything is finally coming together for me health wise.  Below are a few of my recent placings in races….

Lakefront Days Sprint:  1st place overall (averaged 27MPH on bike according to my Garmin, the course was a bit long)
Tristar 111:  3rd place overall amateur (averaged 24.5MPH according to Garmin)

Thanks again,

Andy

Kortney Hagg – Elite Triathlete

Hi Chris
Just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to fit me.  It has made a HUGE difference.  I have PR’d twice on my last two races this year – Pigman Half Ironman and  the St. Croix valley Olympic triathlon, where I lowered my bike split by about 3 minutes!  I am also super comfortable on my bike so thankful I came and saw you!

Jeremy Thompson — Triathlete

Chris,

I just wanted to thank you for fitting my bike.  My biking speed and performance has increased each and every time I have worked with you.  More importantly, my bike feels great and no longer feel fatigued when I get off the bike and start running.

Jeremy

Matt Perrine — Triathlete

Thank you Chris for helping my find the best bike and getting me fit on the bike!

I was in the market to upgrade from a road bike with clip on aero bars to a triathlon bike, but I didn’t really know the best way to go about it.  I asked around and I got Chris’s name as highly respected and knowledgeable on the subject and he would be able to help me.  So, I set up an appointment with Chris.  After taking measurements, Chris looked through many bikes trying to find the best fit for me.  The Argon 18 came out the winner and Chris then contacted a dealer for me to try out the bike.  I purchased the bike and then went back to Chris for the fitting.  Chris went out of his way to get the fitting done quickly for me.  The whole process went much more smoothly and quickly than I had planned.

Prior to the new triathlon bike, my fastest bike average for a 40k was 22 mph during a relay triathlon where I was only doing the bike portion.  Most of my triathlons I averaged  20-21 mph.  I did the Minneapolis Duathlon this past weekend with the new bike and averaged 24 mph for the bike split.  This greatly exceeded any expectations I had when I started the process.  Chris has been great and immensely helpful during the entire process.

Thank you again Chris!  I would recommend Chris to anyone looking to find the right bike and to anyone looking to be fitted on a bike.

Marcus Stromberg — Elite Triathlete

Thanks again for the fit last week.  Yesterday I had my final Tri of the season and the results were better than expected.  Like you mentioned during the fit, you indicated that I would probably not see much of an improvement in the bike speed but I should see some improvement in the run.  As you can see from the link to the results below my bike was right on par with what it has been, around 26 mph, but the run splits blew me away, 5:50/mile.  At Green Lake two weeks ago I did 6:17/mile for a 6 mile run and at Graniteman earlier this year I had my best run splits at 6:05/mile for a 5k.  Yesterday, it really took no time for my legs to come in and when I checked my split at mile 1 and it was 5:57 I thought I was in trouble but I only continued to get stronger throughout the run.

Triathlon Bicycle Buying Basics — The Right Bike for Your Type!

It is easy to buy a bike  because your salesperson says it is “right for you”, but what does that really mean?

What it means to me, is that your bike can be positioned to provide a comfortable, fast ride for YOUR body.

Every Triathlon Bike Manufacturer provides geometry specifics via the web, which vary between makers/models.

Stack and Reach

The term “Stack” referrs to the distance above the Bottom Bracket

The term “Reach” refers to the distance forward of the Bottom Bracket

The Bottom Bracket is measured from the center of the Crankset Bolt

Morphology

In General:

1. “C” impacts Stack.  Longer legs tend towards a “taller” bike, and vice-versa.

2. The measure “D” is more vertical on a bike than the measure “A”, and is therefore more important for determining Stack.

3. “E-F” aids to determine arm-pad Stack. Longer or short upper-arm = taller/lower pad position.

4. “B” impacts Reach, primarily, with “A” acting as a constraint with regard to knee/elbow clearance.

In Complex Terms:

Arm Pad “Stack” and “Reach” should match Torso Length and Effective Trunk Angle.  Effective Trunk Angle accounts for Anatomical Variability (Upper/Lower Arm Length, Kyphosis, Lordosis, Scoliosis, Shoulder Roll, Injury, Prosthetic(s), etc.), betwen Hip Angle and Arm/Pad Contact.

Tim Mikulance — Ironman Triathlete

Chris,
I just wanted to take a second and say thank you for verifying my current TT position on my bike, and giving me the advice to drop the front end after our intial fit, as I got comfortable in it and could handle it.  Today I had my 4th race of the year 22mile bike, and absolutely rocked it..I came in 5th overall biker and placed 9th (my goal of the year was to get into the top 10 overall).  Since initially seeing you, I did my first race of the same distance at 22.7mph…and this one was done at 23.8mph.  So, over 1mph increase in less than 4 months….  I can only imagine what I will be able to accomplish next season….I still have a few more races this year, but I was flying by bikers left and right this morning, and had a friend of mine that left 8-10 minutes ahead of me in a wave and I caught him 15 minutes into my bike and scared the crap out of him flying by at 26+mph..lol!!!

Shantanu Reddy — Avid Athlete/Cyclist

After years of being an avid runner, skier, and hiker, age and injuries starting catching up and I had two knee surgeries in two years.
No longer could my body handle the impact and I was lost without a competitive outlet.
Years ago, I was an avid cyclist but lost interest for no specific reason.  I started looking at cycling as that outlet again.
I purchased a Surly Pacer road bike and started riding.  At first, I could only ride a few miles.  But with determination and strengthening of my muscles to support my challenged knees, I started adding miles and became more and more capable of riding hard and long miles.
I adjusted the bike the best I could and as I started reading more, I became interested in the whole concept of fitting.
Most people have fittings to get more power and go faster and compete better.  In my case, I wanted to be comfortable, avoid pain, and preserve what may by last competitive outlet before my knees give up.
I found Chris and set up an appointment.
We spent a lot of time talking about my goals and what I was feeling.  I was drawn to his body and mind approach to this and how he looked at everything from shoes to pedals to body position with care and attention.
He completely reconfigured my seating position, shoe inserts, and pedal shims and I was immediately transformed.  Much of the pain I tolerated was gone.  I was more comfortable, faster, and stronger and felt like I was making progress every day.
Never once was he focused on pushing me out of there due to a time constraint.  Never once did he not answer a question or return an email.  He was genuinely interesting in helping me get better!
We discussed the fact that I would probably benefit from a new bike and one built to my needs and challenges and we worked on designing a Serotta.
While the Serotta was being built, I continued to train in a diligent manner and the beautiful Serotta finally showed up.
What an amazing machine Chris designed and Allen and Doug at Penn Cycle put together!  It is so comfortable and I am so fast, comfortable, and capable on it.
I ride about 100-150 miles per week only limited by work and family obligations.  I am getting faster and stronger and ride with a group every so often that I could not have hung with for 2 miles last year and not only hang with them but I take my turns at the front just like everyone else.
Chris has enabled me to have a competitive outlet and feel good about myself and my life.  He has allowed me to spend more time outside.  I don’t know how long it will last but what I have gained has already enriched my life.
I am forever indebted to him.

Not bad for a School Teacher!

Comprehensive New Bike Purchase/Fit Services!

I am expanding the BFG fit services to include a comprehensive New Bike Purchase Program.

Why?

To ensure that you receive honest, intellegent, unbiased assistance in purchasing the right bike for your body!

How?

1. Generate preliminary Fit-Data, using the Serotta Size Cycle or Biobike.

2. Identify Bike Manufacturer/Model, from Bike Cad, based on that data.

3. Identify the best Shop, based on manufacturer, preference, and location.

4. Contact Shop to ensure bike is available.

5. Travel, together, to specified Shop to make purchase.

6. Finalize New-Bike fitting, at Studio.

How Much?

$400.

I am fairly certain this is a go, but would love feedback from former/prospective clients before launching.

Thanks.

Diane Birkeland – Ironman Triathlete

Chris,

I have to THANK YOU sincerely for fitting me on my bike with only a few days before my “A” race. I know most people would not recommend this so close to a race but I have complete confidence in you and knew I was in good hands. My bike split was awesome and more importantly i felt so much more powerful and comfortable.

I did go home with a ticket to the 70.3 World Championships this year.

My top bike split secured my spot!!!!!

Thanks again, Diane

Aaron Hoffman – Triathlete

Chris has fit me on multiple bikes over the years, and his knowledge of physiology and fit are unparalleled. Unlike other fit systems, he does not try to apply stock formulas to every individual, and works with you to find a fit that works best for your specific body type. If you ride a bike, Chris can help improve comfort and performance.

Matt Mosher — Ironman Triathlete

Chris,

I wanted to send you a quick note of THANKS for fitting me on my P3.  I recently completed the Couer d’Alene Ironman and felt great coming off of the 4,986 feet of climbing on the bike.  My lower back felt fine throughout the entire ride and I ended up completing the bike course without any issues thanks to your expertise and patience in getting me fitted properly.  I continue to exclaim to others that your technique works!  I’ll be attempting the Ironman Canada course in a few short weeks and Ironman Arizona later this year.

Now I only have to work on my nutrition so I can complete the run in a timely fashion :)

Thanks again,

Matt Mosher

April Morgan — Ironman Triathlete

Balser!!!

I can’t tell you how many times I thought of you as I was rocking the bike course at IM CDA last Sunday!  When I got on the bike the first 5 miles I instantly noticed how much better I could breathe.  Wow!  And I looked down and saw how fast I was riding and then realized how easy it felt.  I knew it was going to be a good day!  The hills came and went and I just kept waiting for them to start taking a toll on my legs…it just never happened.  My legs were finally doing what they were supposed to be doing on the bike and all I had to worry about was staying on course and keeping my nutrition in check!  It was incredible.  I can’t thank you enough!  When I dismounted my bike heading into T2 I could see 4 others in front of me wobbling slowly off their bikes, I just slid off, felt great instantly and zipped right past them and into one of my fastest T2s to date.  It was such a treat after a long hard spring of training indoors!

In the end I rode 10 minutes faster than IM Wisconsin – 5:36. To prove it wasn’t’ just an easier course…I checked how I fared against others.  At Wisconsin I had the 13th best Amateur bike, at CDA it was the 7th best Amateur bike!   Overall I PR’d by 7 minutes at 10:57!  All things considered, I’m pretty happy with the end result.

The best part of all of this is that based on how my legs felt, I think I could have actually rode the course harder.  I even lost a bit of time on the bike as I had to stop on 3 hills to fix the chain (ugh). I also know I’m only going to keep getting stronger and faster with this new position.

The only minor issue was that I had was some shoulder tightness during the 2nd loop, but I thought maybe that was just from being tense and/or not riding outside before the race.  Never felt any of that stuff on my long trainer rides.

Hope you’re doing well and you get a chance to enjoy the nice weekend!

Cheers!

April

EMG Biofeedback Improves Performance!

My clients trained with the BTS EMG experience gains of 20-60 watts, without significant impact on HR, cadence, or percieved effort, AFTER the improvements gained from proper positioning.

How?

EMG analysis and biofeedback.

It is possible to train muscles to be more efficient — firing with greater acceleration, amplitude, frequency and latency — within 5-10 minutes, using biofeedback and verbal coaching techniques.  These improvements are real — indicated by real-time muscle recording — and enduring.

I’ve decided to refine and expand the use of EMG for cyclists:

BTS Bioengineering

26 Jun 2011

Dear Professor Balser,

Further to our email exchange, I have pleasure in sending you a quotation for the BTS wireless EMG system the FreeEMG300 as follows.

The FREEEMG300 has been created for sport applications because has been specifically designed for dynamic acquisitions. BTS performed, before to release the device, detailed test  in one of the worst condition possible: athletes running 400 meters and bikers on the indoor bicycle ring

The results led us to improve particular features:

  • ·         extremely reduced weight: every probes weights less than 8gr. In this way they can be fixed directly on the skin through standard Ag/Cl electrodes without additional adhesive tape. For the same reason the inertial movement (even in the more challenging situation) are reduced and virtually not present: the final signal does not present in this way artifacts due to the relative movements between skin/probe

The other advantage of this design is that the probes can be placed on the subject WIHTOUT additional tape, making the preparation quick and easy.

  • ·         variable geometry: the electrodes can be adapted to all the muscles (which differ for size and shape)
  • ·         solid state buffer memory for the Virtual Wire Function: every probes can store up to 180 seconds of data. In this way even if there are problems in the wireless transmission the data is stored and re-send when the communication is re-established. The result is an always reliable signal even when the probes are out of the transmission range.

The transmission between probes and Patient Unit use a certified Wi-Fi protocol which means that both probes and patient unit double check if the packages sent by probes correspond to the one received. In case of discrepancies every package is re-sent. With this protocol the solid memory is fundamental because can store as I wrote you before even in the worst case (total transmission black out) up to 180 sec of data. The transmission raged reached with this technology is up to 50 meters from the patient unit to the probes.

  • ·         More than that every probe, which has a 16bit A/D converter, has a dedicated channel for transmission. The patient unit in fact is designed, according to the configuration, with up to 16 different channels to receive the most accurate data without compromises.

All the technological solutions used lead just to one practical goal: the MOST ACCURATE AND RELIABLE EMG signal.

The FREEEMG300 has also wireless footswitches (right side of the picture) to analyze the gait cycles and automatically detect heel strike, toe off etc etc.. And can be integrated with EGN (electrogoniometers) and accelerometers.

The FreeEMG300 is designed with a totally new hardware created to provide the best quality signal ever even in the most critical situations (multiple WiFi transmissions, analogue transmissions, long range, …). Also the FreeEMG300 is capable to collect data with an acquisition frequency up to 4Khz, making the system suitable for fine wire electrodes.

Concerning the video analysis the BTS FREEEMG300 can be integrated with our BTS VIXTA system providing video data fully synchronized with EMG to create an analysis that can correlate the EMG activity with specific movements observed by the video cameras. The video controller can use up to 4 TVCs simultaneously. The TVCs are portable and mounted on mobile tripods. Typically the standard configuration is with 2 TVCs placed respectively in the sagittal and in the frontal plan to obtain a 3D (two bi-dimensional planes) subject evaluation. Every lab can however customize the TVCs configuration to obtain different views (e.g. TVCs in the same plane but with different zoom to evaluate the general movement AND a detail).

Finally BTS Bioengineering can acquire Force Platform signal controlling everything (EMG, Video and kinetic) from one software and workstation integrating EVERYTHING in one single file providing an accurate athlete’s evaluation.

Those are several reasons why BTS Bioengineering has been chosen by the top European soccer teams, the Italian Olympic committee and the most important the street bike teams such as MAPEI. In collaboration with them we designed a specific lab to evaluate athletes performances and to optimize their posture on the bicycle seat.

Labs that work in sport the Performance Suite is also available. This package includes protocols designed to evaluate several sports gesture such as cycling, running, squatting, jumping, golf, tennis, and ski with the aim of improving performance, optimizing coaching, averting injuries and structuring rehabilitation programs.

With BTS software, L@bnet, your Lab can be 24/7 connected with our headquarters in Italy and US and can be remotely checked up for diagnostic purposes. Software upgrade and protocol sharing have never been easier and faster.

Further than that through L@bnet your lab will have access to a network composed by universities and hospitals that work together for the realization of new protocols and to share experiences and suggestions.

Kevin Cleereman — Avid Cyclist

As a 50 year old age group cyclist/triathlete, getting a bike fit from Chris has been the best investment I’ve made in cycling! Not only has it paid for itself in better comfort and performance on the bike, I learned a lot from Chris in the process! He truly is a bike guru, and is gracious in sharing his knowledge with his customers. I am truly grateful for getting connected with Chris and will continue to work with him for what I hope is many more years of cycling.

Best regards, Kevin
