Brendan Dolan — Triathlete

Hey Chris-

Just thought I would report back on some recent races:

1.  Did Tuesday Night Time Trial at 240W avg. which is a 20W avg. since my last time trial and post-bike fit w/ you!!!

2.  Raced Oakdale Duathlon on Saturday.  Despite a nagging calf issue on the run, finished 20th overall and 2nd in my AG with my fastest bike split to date on that course (23.5mph which is great for just being May).

Dan Arlandson — Ironman Triathlete

The bike and fit are great. I am very comfy and have no problem holding watts in the aero position. Your tips on pedal stroke were a great help and ankling through my pedal stroke has  loosened my calves up, which is a great help in holding my running form off the bike. Thanks again for your help.

Marcus Stromberg — Elite Triathlete

Chris,

I wanted to take the time to thank you for the help you’ve given me this offseason dialing in my bike fit and working with me on my peddle efficiency.

This Saturday I had an incredible performance at the Chain of Lakes Triathlon in Alexandria, MN.  All three legs of the race were very balanced from a performance standpoint.  What continues to amaze me though after working with you is how not only has my bike performance increased as well as my comfort on the bike but also my run performance.  Granted I have put a lot of focus into my run training this offseason but it use to be that it would take me a mile to a mile and a half for my legs to come in on the run.  Now, however I don’t experience that at all.  In fact in this race I actually had to throttle back on the run out of transition because I was comfortably running at a pace I was concerned I couldn’t sustain.

Thanks again for your overwhelming desire to make me and all those that you work with better athletes, your enthusiastic attitude is inspiring.

Marcus

Chris,

Let me first say thank you for your time two weeks ago when we came up to MN.  I am very confident I am “locked in” now and the footbeds/shoe  combination works like a charm.  I was able to ride indoors a few times since seeing you, but I finally today had a chance to put some “quaility” miles in with efforts.  Andy Neary, and Jay (Jason) Zellner, teammates of mine who you have fit also, all went out today for a Team ride.  We started with a large group on a noodle ride for 18 miles, then broke out into our own group.  Once we broke out, it was on, we all joked how we should get signs on our jerseys that read “FIT BY CHRIS” :)   just to let everyone know why they couldn’t keep up with up..LOL!  Anyways, we got out and did some tempo work and some “efforts”, and let me tell you, not only did we rock the tempo efforts, but they were both looking at me like WTF!  What is up with this guy :)   I felt like 25mph was easy and decided to push it a bit, well the next thing I look down and my legs are carrying me to 29mph like it used to be at 22-23mph.  This is unreal Chris, I now feel like I am going to be able to turn some heads.  I am a big guy, so when I start to cruise past guys that are 50-75 lbs less than me, I am going to have to smile a bit because I know I am where I need to be.  Not only are the footbeds and shoes helping me while cycling, I have actually took my old ones out and put them in my running shoes, and I can report that my ankles have been feeling ALOT better and I am able to run without much discomfort.  So for all of your hard work and knowledge I want to say THANK YOU!

Hey Chris,

Just a note to let you know I had my first group ride with my club last night and I held the wheel of people who used to drop me last year. 27 MPH felt like 20.

Thanks again for the fit.

You worked with me last March/April regarding my hip asymmetry and reach issues on my road bike and mountain bike . I’m happy to say that the changes in bike position to account for my short torso and long femurs, the new adamo seat and compact bar really helped. I had a very enjoyable bike season for the first time in about the last decade and had a lot of fun mountain bike racing on the ol’ blue stumpjumper again!

Chris, I have now been back from vac. for 2 weeks and have finally had a chance to really take the bike out and let lose. I can not thank you enough for helping me. For the first time in 3 years, I don’t have back, neck, and or knee pain after riding. I have a lot of work to do but at least I can enjoy the rides a lot more. I look forward to seeing you in the future. I have been telling everybody about the great job you did and how much you helped. Over the next month or so I will keep lowering the shim that you put in my shoe and lower the front arrow bars.  I also have been working on my pedal stroke which is hard right now but I know will pay off in the end. Again thank you soooo much for doing what you do..

Charles Weisner — Bike Fit in Japan

Please Excuse My absence from the forums I was in America.

I went to Washington and earned my certification as a Bikefit Pro. A “Bikefit Pro” is someone whom attends 2 day’s of extensive hands on training at the Bikefit headquarters in Kirkland Washington. I worked with Tony Corke on the first day with two other students. We learned about the foot pedal interface and fit 2 athletes that day. It was a great experience as one of the athletes had a severe leg length discrepancy. Most people have arms or legs that are different lengths. In fact, it is normal for leg lengths to be different by as much as one centimeter. The athlete we worked with this day had closer to four centimeters. We worked and worked and were able to fit him properly. Great learning experience!

I arrived at the Bikefit school one day late. For that reason the owner and creator of The Bicycle Fitting System Paul Swift worked one on one with me for eight hours. Paul is Gold Medalist at the 1998 Goodwill Games, 8-time US National Champion, US National Cycling Team member 1983 to 1997, competed at World Championships & World Cup events and is the creator of the second oldest bike fitting system around. Needless to say I was in good hands!

Paul and I fit one cyclist together and we also assessed my own foot pedal interface. Paul is a great guy and I learned so much from him. He answered every question I had about fit. I have fit hundreds of cyclists. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on the subject, so when I have to pay money for education on the subject, you best believe I wrote down a series of questions, to which he answered with the greatest of clarity.

I am now a Bikefit certified Pro!

Now What you ask?

If that was not enough I decided to travel to Minnesota. Why? I sought out Chris Balser, the Bike Fit Guru.

http://www.bicyclefitguru.com/category/featured-story/

A guru (Sanskrit: गुरु) is one who is regarded as having great knowledge, wisdom, and authority in a certain area, and who uses it to guide others. I asked Chris to accept me as his humble grasshopper and he accepted. I worked with him for 15 hours fitting multiple athletes. I learned more from Chris in that time than I have in my entire life. He did this all for free. He is a true Guru! I have so much respect for him and learned so much I can not put into words. My deepest respect to him.

Namaste Chris Balser! Chris Also fit me using a host of really awesome (cant swear on the forums) equipment including Retul, Computrainer Spinscan, EMG analysis in Conjunction with Cycling Movement Patterns. I got set the F*$k up! Never more comfortable in my life on a bicycle. The biggest change was to a wider stance width, custom insoles and most of all being taught how to pedal! I thought I knew but the EMG showed me how to get every watt out of my muscle and the computrainer confirmed it! I also visited San Francisco , got my mind right with some old friends and demode the new Yeti SB66 from Big Swingin Cycles, my old work place http://www.bigswingincycles.com/ (scroll down to see Yeti I rode) through GGP.

Let me know if I can make your bike fit you. I am confident I can make you a better athlete. I am now gonna smoke this Cuban StuInTokyo gave me (I wont inhale) because with this entry my journey is over. A good moment indeed.

Thanks for reading.

Peace

-Chuck

Julia Weisbecker — Competitive Triathlete

Hey Chris

Just wanted to tell you I tested this morning on the bike. I was nearly 20 watts higher than last fall. And at 126 lbs that is huge in my book:) My CT tested me at 204 and my PT (which is always lower) said 197 for the 20 min ALL out test with cadence of 90 rpms or more. So I am thrilled. It is always SO HARD to do those, but I think the bike fit helped. MY coach said to take a little credit for myself, but I told her you were getting credit for AT LEAST 10 of those watts:)

Have a great weekend!

Colin Manley — Cat 1/2 Cyclist

I am a long-time cyclist with over 27 years of experience and innumerable thousands upon thousands of miles under my belt.  During that time I have periodically struggled with my position on the bike.   And like many fellow cyclists, I read books, sought advice and asked for opinions before attempting to “fit myself.”  I know that WE have all been there…  sitting on our trainers in the basement in front of a mirror with a carpenter’s level, measuring tape, plumb line and wrenches in hand.  You know it’s true!!

This past spring my body experienced the usual aches and pains that many of us have come to expect after a long off-season.  Neck, shoulders, arms, lower back…. LEGS!  All making readjustments to another season back on the road or trail.  For me, those aches and pains persisted and my cycling suffered as a result.  Once again I attempted to make my own adjustments but soon became frustrated with my continued inconsistency….  One day was really good.  The next several a struggle!

I relayed this very sad story to a friend who said, “I know this guy who you should go see!!”  [Enter Chris Balser]  So, I made my appointment with The Bicycle Fit Guru and met with him late this past summer.  Honestly, given my past struggles and attempts to address those struggles, I was a little skeptical.  However, Chris made quick work of that skepticism by making some immediate adjustments based on what his trained eye saw.  Instant results!!  Then made further changes based on what “the numbers” said.  As a result, I don’t know that I have ever felt this comfortable or powerful on a bike before!  He literally performed a minor miracle!

In short, Chris brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and know-how and a passion for his craft to the sport of cycling.  Whether you are an elite competitive road racer, a recreational cyclist or something in between, working with him should be considered the foundation for any level of cycling pursuit.  It is a worthwhile short term investment that will pay out long term dividends!

BFG Rider – Jesse Rients – Wins Laser Cross Series!

The elite men’s series title was to be a showdown between current leader Rients and 2nd position Chris Fisher (Crossniacs). Faulkner marked Rients early in the race to help his teammate, while Lemieux and Allen attacked off the front. Once the front group caught the leading duo, Faulkner went on the attack, taking only Lemieux with him. Lap after lap ticked by as Lemieux continued to stick to CJ’s wheel. Lemieux made his move to the front on the far side of the course, only to have Faulkner push past as they approached the sandpit, and take the victory. Rients was able to distance himself from a fading Fisher, to seal his Lazer Series victory, with Peterson finishing well enough to move up to 2nd in the overall.

A huge thanks to title sponsor Lazer Sport for a great cross series, and HUP united and Biketrow Racing for putting on a great weekend of events. Good luck to all the local racers as they push on to Cross Nationals in January in Madison, WI.

For the 2nd year in succession, a Wisconsin rider spoiled the party at the MN State Cyclocross Championships. Last year it was Specialized rider Mark LaLonde. This year, it was 16 year-old Jordan Cullen (Clif Bar Development Cross Team) taking the win at Minnesota’s biggest cyclocross event of the year. The rider, who hails from just across the border in Hudson, WI, overcame a 20 second deficit, catching CJ Faulkner (Crossniacs) just after the barriers as they approached the finish. Jesse Rients (Kuhl/Bicycle Fit Guru), Matt Peterson (Balance/Eriks), and Matt Allen (Behind Bars/LGR) finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively. As Cullen is a Wisconsin resident, the 2011 MN State Cyclocross Elite Men’s title goes to Faulkner.

Snowy, blustery, and cold conditions were a factor in the races later in the day. Nothing compared to the blizzard conditions of last year, but it certainly wasn’t just any day in the Park. The biggest challenge for riders was iced up cleats, making it difficult to clip back into their pedals, which made for a scary ride down the hill after the stair run-up.

Jenna Rinehart (specialized) chose to ride her mountain bike, and it proved to me the right choice. She made quick work of the Elite Women’s field, riding away almost immediately, and growing her gap all the way to the finish. The battle for 2nd place was much tighter, with Bianca Bergman (Texas Roadhouse) out-sprinting Linda Sone (CycleSmart.com/Flanders) for the honor. Jeanne Fleck (Velo Duluth), and Terra James (Sweet and Salty Cycling) finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

In the Elite Men’s race, Cullen was first off the line, but Jay “Hollywood” Henderson (Silver Cycling) would not be denied the hole shot, overtaking the youngster going around the ball field. A large group of over a dozen riders were still in contention after the first lap, led through by Cullen, Hollywood, Faulkner, and 2009 winner Doug Swanson (GrandStay Hotels). By the end of the 2nd lap, Cullen and Faulkner had separated themselves from the pack, with Swanson the closest chaser. By the halfway point, Swanson faded, and Rients had taken over 3rd position followed by Peterson and Masters 35+ leader, Chris Smith (HUP United). Contender Josh Roeser (Crossniacs/Bicycle Fit Guru) pull his hamstring and was out of the race, and his teammate Chris Fisher struggled with the cold, and pulled out as well. 2008 winner Pat Lemieux (Specialized) was not on a good day, but was still having fun, doing cross-ups off the bumps near the finish line.

With 4 laps to go, Faulkner dropped young Cullen and made his bid for glory. His lead grew to over 20 seconds with 2 laps to go, and Rients was closing in on 2nd place. Then the youngster seemed to find a second wind, and started charging forward towards the leader. As Rients fell back into a solid 3rd place, Cullen halved his gap to the front by the start of the bell lap. Faulkner still held a solid gap at the top of the stairs, but Cullen would not relent. The charge continued, and the catch was made right at the barriers, just a few turns before the finish. Cullen carried his momentum all the way to the line, posting up as the crowd looked on in bewilderment. An amazing comeback that no one, not even the winner himself could have predicted.

A hearty congratulations to all the newly crowned MN State Cyclocross Champions. A big thanks to HUP United and Curt Goodrich Racing for putting on an amazing event. Hope to see you Sunday at the season finale and final race of the Lazer Sport Cyclocross Super Series, the GP Zac Daab.

Professional Bike Fit Myths

Professional Bicycle Fitting Precautions
A Consumer’s Guide

An increasing number of bicycle dealers are now offering “professional fit”  services”, and with fees ranging from $30-$400+, it is useful to have some facts before making an appointment — if an appointment is really what you need.

1. The majority of “Bicycle Fit Professionals” have attended a total of only 3-7 days training. Ask for credentials and references, and employ internet search-engines for unbiased data.

2. Systematic protocol is flawed by negating the diversity between cyclists. Humans are too unique and complex for patent assessments and and/or outcome data. If an adjustment causes discomfort, it is wrong for your body.

3. Video analysis is two-dimensional, regardless of how many cameras are used. 3D motion analysis is subject to LED placement variability. These tools are good at recording angles. Creating optimal fit is the responsibility of you and your technician.

4. Saddle Height is not static. To demonstrate, bend forward and try to touch the floor. Do it again. Try repeating the exercise when it is cold, hot, at the end of a hard ride, before an easy ride, etc. It will never be identical because our activities and climate are always changing. Remember this when prescribed the “magic number”.

5. Good bike fit does not hurt! If you continue to have pain anywhere that is not a function of fatigue, your fit can be improved

6. Shoes should be comfortable. Do not believe that they will “break-in”. They must not be loose, either. A good fit technician can modify shoe-fit with shoe-maker and podiatry tooling.

7. Assessment procedures based on physical therapy techniques are not reliable for outcome data. There is an inherent flaw to every test due to bone and ligament variability. So if you are told you have: “X”, “Y”, or “Z”, get it confirmed by a doctor before announcing it to the world.

8. It is not hard to find a comfortable saddle. It is very hard to find someone willing to put your bike on a stand and let you try a number of makes and models. Do not expect it to break-in. It is your fitter’s responsibility to determine proper sizing.

9. Sit-bone measurement devices have no utility when determining correct saddle-size. Saddle comfort is a product of pressure distribution and pelvic stability. The correct saddle for you will have a nose-width, taper, and terminal shape consistent with pubis, rami, tuberosities, and functional pelvic angle.

10. You are the true authority on bike fit for your body. The most accurate union for you and your bike resides inside YOU! The nervous system components, proprioception (feedback mechanism for body movement); vestibular sense (balance in relation to movement and gravity); and kinesthesia (joint position) are sufficient to the task, but are primarily “touchy-feely”. They are great at determining what is better and worse on a bike, but are unable to sample different options due to the nature of cycling.

Our problem is that riding a bicycle is unnatural. We were not intended to be stuck in a fixed, symmetrical position, making circles with our feet, suspended by saddle and handlebars. Our data for negotiating life is built from the knowledge, experience, and practice of events. Learning involves practice; practice increases knowledge, and time creates experience.

BFG Female “Most Improved Riders” – Minnesota Multisport Awards!

* MICHELLE ANDRES, 34, East Gull Lake

- A shoo-in to earn her first berth on Team Minnesota, the mother of five won seven of her 13 career victories in 2011. Her win at Gear West Du was particularly impressive, almost earning her a Performance of the Year nomination to go with her MI and TOY nods. (Photo below with her basketball team.)

* SUZIE FOX, 28, Chaska

- Formerly Suzie Finger (her legal name change becomes official tomorrow!), the 2009 Rookie of the Year has twice flirted with a Team Minnesota spot. She’ll make it this year, thanks to her wins at Apple and Iron Girl and her podiums at Gear West, Manitou, Minneman and Turtleman Du.

BFG Rider – Kortney Hagg – Rocks in Austin 70.3 Tri!

Austin 70.3 – Kortney Haag is one of our region’s premier 70.3 racers. Her first effort at that distance was in July of 2009 at Chisago. Though the course was approximately 8 minutes short (for elites), she placed 3rd in a time of 4:25:54, the equivalent of a 4:33. Her next half was Pigman ’09, which she won in 4:49:37, a remarkable effort considering the Tsunamiesque winds and intermittent rain.

Pregnancy intervened in 2010. Her next half was Pigman last August, where she broke the previous course record yet finished 2nd, 37 ticks behind the talented Jennifer Sloan of Tulsa, Oklahoma. FYI, Sloan went on to post a 9:56:40 at Kona a few weeks back.

Kort’s most recent 70.3 effort was last Sunday in Austin, Texas. There she strung together some sweet splits (S-30:01, B-2:30::37, R-1:34:40) en route to a 4:40:00, which landed her in 6th place overall (2nd amateur). She was only 10:45 behind pro winner Jessica Meyers….

Dustin Warner – Ironman Triathlete

Chris,

For every mile traveled be it on the road or trainer, I have come to realize the value of having an optimal bike fit.  After riding my Quintana Roo Kilo for several years, I became accustomed to what I thought was insignificant toe numbness and a sore saddle.  However, after you took my dimensions, introduced a new pair of LG shoes, and fit my bike, form and function were interwoven together.  To that end my QR took to me to IM Wisconsin, and the bike felt great.  I ran my marathon about 10 minutes faster than I anticipated.

Knowing that my bike served its purpose, I was ready to upgrade.  You met me at Gear West Bike and Tri.  You and Kevin O’Connor identified the right bike for my dimensions as opposed to retrofitting a bike in “hopes” of a proper fit.  I am grateful for your invaluable service and look forward racing my QR Lucero next season.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Dustin Warner

Teaching @ Yoga House this Winter -Metromix Twin Cities

Yoga House

Tucked cozily on the border between Minneapolis and Edina, Yoga House specializes in Ashtanga (“a precise sequence of postures with a controlled breathing technique”) and MySore (characterized by a silent sequence of poses that are tailored to the practitioner’s need) styles of yoga.

Chris Balser, who will teach Intro to Ashtanga on Sundays this winter, describes Yoga House’s philosophy as “finding the posture based on individual needs, not book-based aesthetics. We embrace the beauty in a person’s expression of that posture, rather than his/her flexibility.”  Emphasis is placed on the sensation (or, in yoga speak, “vibrations”) of the experience rather than whether or not you can touch the floor in Triangle or find lift-off in Crane Pose.

Because the Ashtanga method is most effective when practiced daily, students are encouraged to make a commitment to attend class at least three times a week.

Fred Mills, Freewheel, took the hole shot in the Cat 1/2/3 race in pursuit of the $20 offered to the first rider to the single barrier. After Mills took the $20, Swanson took over, with Jesse Rients, Kuhl/Bicycle Fit Guru joining him. Adam Froemming, MBRC/Flanders, and Chris Smith, HUP United were paired up in chase behind. After a couple laps, those 4 riders formed a group, and traded body blows for much of the remainder of the race. On the penultimate lap, Froemming was leading the group, only to make a wrong turn, and drop out of contention. Swanson pressed the other 2 in the final lap, drawing a large enough gap to cruise to his 4th TNC victory. Rients was bridesmaid again, Smithers 3rd.
